All our canoes are 17’ aluminum Grumman canoes manufactured by the Marathon Boat Group in Marathon, NY. We are a Grumman dealer. We keep a few newer boats in stock but we can order what you need. They are considered to be the Cadillac of the aluminum canoes because of their durability, tracking, and ease of handling.

Our canoes will hold 2 adults and up to 3 small kids comfortably. If camping out and taking your camping gear with you, need to take into mind how much camping gear you will be able to load if you want to have extra people in the middle. We do not allow 4 adult sized people in a canoe.

  •       One or two paddlers can handle a Grumman. As a solo paddler, you would sit in the canoe backwards to bring your weight more towards the center. We will supply a bucket of water as a counterweight in the “front” (really near the back seat).
  •       One person paddling alone pays the per canoe price.
  •       During low water, canoes are easier to use because when you hit a shallow spot, you can step out and let it float over the sandbar vs. having to climb out like a kayak. Canoes are better because you sit higher and can read the river easier.

Want a solo or tandem kayak? We have both.

We have cockpit (sit-in) or sit-on-top (SOT) tandems (two people) and SOT solos available at this time. We are interested if you know of a good cockpit solo kayak model. Our current brands are Perception, Old Town, and Wilderness Systems. The SOTs have molded seats and seatbacks are available for rent at $4.00 each for the day or $6 each for overnight. Our cockpit kayaks have seatbacks already built in.

Notes:

  •       Most of our rentals are for canoes because the canoes hold more stuff like kids, fossil hunting equipment, and camping gear.
  •       Kayaks are the same price as canoes.
  •       A solo kayak is the same price as a tandem kayak.
  •       If you desire to rent kayaks, we need a reservation and you need to check-in at least a half hour (30 min.) early.
  •       The number of kayaks we have for rent is limited, we highly recommend you make reservations. Groups wanting kayaks definitely need to call way ahead, we do book out on kayaks.
  •       If you show up at the last minute, we may not have time to switch canoes for kayaks on the trailers even if you have a reservation. We don’t load kayaks until we see the whites of your eyes!
  •       Our kayaks are recreational kayaks, there is no storage. For the day, bring a small cooler, soft-sided is best. If planning an overnight, plan on having your camping gear delivered, paddle a tandem kayak solo (storage in front seat) or put your camping gear in accompanying canoes if any.
  •       Kayaks especially the solos have weight restrictions. That’s including you, your cooler, sifters, etc. Canoes hold more weight. The length of the solos are all approximately 10 ft. overall. If you are on the large size, take a tandem, it will have more room and floatation.
  •       Plan on getting wet while in a kayak.
  •       If you have leg and/or knee problems, a kayak is not recommended for you. They are harder to get in and out of and require knee bending and sitting for long lengths of time.
  •       Kayaks only hold one or two people depending on the style You could fit a youngster, 5 & under on the Tandem SOT.
  •       All our kayak paddles are standard livery model, same size, same model.
  •       At 24″ below normal we stop renting kayaks. Because kayaks are harder to get in and out of, the kayakers have a tendency to use the paddles to push off and they break the paddles. Canoes are better than kayaks during low water because you can just step in and out of a canoe with ease, not climbing in and out and you can see the darker water in the river channel better. If you want to rent a kayak during low water, bring your own paddle and we’ll rent a kayak to you.

  •       Paddleboards are considered a vessel by the USCG so a lifejacket is required on the board. .
  •       We only allow one person per board.
  •       We only recommend using a paddleboard for the shorter Brownville or Oak Hill Runs unless you are an experienced river tripper. Don’t forget, you will mostly be standing up on a SUP.
  •       Paddleboards don’t have any storage so are not amenable for overnight river tripping unless you are having your camping gear delivered.
